For over twenty years, Semmco has been dedicated to designing innovative solutions for a safe and efficient working environment across a number of critical industrial sectors. Founded in 1993 by Managing Director Stuart McOnie, Semmco entered the market with a range of engineered solutions for service companies at Heathrow Airport, building nitrogen generating systems as well as developing nitrogen and oxygen panels.

However, Stuart’s initial working background was designing different types of breathing apparatus, and with years of experience and very specific knowledge, Stuart and his team embarked on a research and development project to create the HEAD 10, a new concept in escape breathing apparatus. Providing 10 minutes of escape time, lower in cost, considerably reducing maintenance, and with a never before seen inbuilt personal safety alarm, this product quickly garnered praise and recognition. HEAD 10 appeared on Tomorrow’s World, the much loved science and technology television series and won industry awards, including the inaugural 2001 British Safety Industry Federation Product Innovation Award. This product was the first in Semmco’s Life Protection Systems range and is used across chemical, power generation, water and automotive industries worldwide. A later version, the 15 minute rescue set, HEAD15, is now found in all UK prisons.

In 1999 , following a trip to a trade show in Miami, Stuart identified an opportunity to manufacture variable height access steps in aluminium to enable engineers to carry out maintenance on different types and sizes of aircraft, safely and easily, that could be adjusted to meet the size of a specific plane. He also realised the potential for this product in other sectors, including rail and developed a new product range that focused on ground support equipment for the aviation market and safe access equipment for the rail and aviation industries.

Semmco is now a global business operating across Europe, the Middle East, Australasia, North and South America with manufacturing, maintenance and assembly facilities in Texas, USA and Dubai, UAE as well as their HQ in Woking, UK. Customers include British Airways, Lufthansa, Wessex Water, First Capital Connect, Alstrom and HM Prisons.
